UAE customs & import duty guides.

Any UAE business that imports or exports has to deal with customs — registration, duty, HS-code classification, clearance and the way import VAT interacts with it all. This hub collects our customs guides for Dubai traders and free zone companies. You'll find plain-English explainers on customs registration and the importer code, how import duty is calculated, when the 5% duty applies and where exemptions or free-zone treatment change the picture, and how import VAT is accounted for on your return. We also cover documentation — commercial invoices, certificates of origin and the records customs and the FTA expect you to keep. Each guide is written for owners and finance staff who want cross-border trade to move without costly hold-ups. Read to understand the process, then talk to us about the VAT and accounting support that keeps your import and export records clean and compliant.

FAQs

Customs questions, answered

  • Do UAE businesses need to register with customs to import?

Yes — importers generally need a customs registration (importer code) linked to their trade licence before clearing goods. Registration is handled through the relevant emirate's customs authority and is separate from VAT and corporate tax registration.

  • How much is import duty in the UAE?

The standard customs duty rate is 5% on most goods based on the CIF value, though some categories are exempt or subject to higher rates, and free-zone treatment can differ. Correct HS-code classification determines the duty that actually applies.

  • How does import VAT work in the UAE?

Import VAT at 5% generally applies to goods entering the UAE, and VAT-registered importers usually account for it through the reverse-charge mechanism on their VAT return rather than paying it upfront — subject to holding the correct documentation. Accurate records keep imports and VAT aligned.
