Where to find it

How to find your UAE TRN in four places.

Once the FTA issues your TRN, the same 15-digit number appears across every official document and every customer-facing tax invoice. If you are unsure which number is the TRN, check these four sources in order — the most authoritative is always EmaraTax itself.

  1. Step 1

    Trade licence document

Most DED and free-zone licence renewals issued after 2018 print the TRN under "Tax Information" or "FTA Registration". Look for a 15-digit string starting with 100.

  2. Step 2

    VAT registration certificate

The PDF certificate the FTA emails on approval shows the TRN at the top, alongside the legal name, effective date and tax period. Save this file — your auditor will ask for it.

  3. Step 3

    EmaraTax portal dashboard

Log in at eservices.tax.gov.ae. The TRN is displayed on the taxable-person summary card on the dashboard. This is the canonical source — if any other document conflicts, EmaraTax wins.

  4. Step 4

    Tax invoice header

UAE VAT law requires every tax invoice to show the supplier's TRN. Pull any invoice you have issued in the last 12 months — the TRN sits in the header block beside the legal name.

Format anatomy

What does a UAE TRN look like?

Example TRN

100·0000·0000·0000·3

Every UAE TRN is a fixed-length 15-digit string. The FTA does not use letters, spaces, or dashes — those are formatting conventions some businesses add to make the number easier to read. When you enter or store a TRN, store it as 15 unbroken digits so that lookups and database joins work cleanly.

Mandatory rules

  • · Exactly 15 digits, no more, no less
  • · Always starts with the prefix 100
  • · Numeric only — no letters, spaces or dashes
  • · Unique to one taxable person (one entity = one TRN)
  • · Issued by the FTA, never by a free zone or DED

Common mistakes

  • · Confusing the trade licence number with the TRN
  • · Storing the TRN with dashes (breaks ERP joins)
  • · Accepting a 14- or 16-digit number from a supplier
  • · Using the same TRN across multiple legal entities
  • · Quoting an expired TRN after a deregistration

Verify a third party

How to verify a supplier's UAE TRN on EmaraTax.

The FTA hosts a free public TRN lookup. Use it before claiming input VAT on any large invoice, when on-boarding a new supplier, and quarterly across your vendor master. A TRN that fails verification means input VAT can be disallowed at audit — the cost falls on the buyer, not the supplier.

  1. 1

    Open the FTA EmaraTax portal

Go to eservices.tax.gov.ae. You do not need to log in to use TRN verification — the lookup is publicly available on the homepage.

  2. 2

    Locate the "TRN Verification" tile

On the EmaraTax landing page, look for the public services row. The TRN Verification tile sits alongside the e-services login. Click it to open the lookup form.

  3. 3

Enter the 15-digit TRN and the security code

Paste the TRN with no spaces or dashes. Complete the CAPTCHA / security code shown. Click "Validate".

  4. 4

Confirm the registered legal name matches

The portal returns the legal name registered against that TRN. Compare it with the supplier name on the invoice — character-for-character. A name mismatch is a red flag; pause payment and ask the supplier to reconcile before processing.

  5. 5

Save a screenshot for your audit file

For large invoices or new suppliers, keep a dated screenshot of the verification result in your accounts-payable folder. It is your evidence that you exercised reasonable care if the supplier's TRN is later suspended.

Scope & disclaimer

This tool checks TRN format only. Active registration status, validity and account standing can only be confirmed via the FTA's official EmaraTax portal at eservices.tax.gov.ae.

UAE TRN FAQs

Quick answers on UAE Tax Registration Numbers.

What does TRN mean in the UAE?

TRN stands for Tax Registration Number. It is a 15-digit identifier issued by the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) when a business or individual registers for VAT or Corporate Tax. Every TRN starts with '100' and is unique to one taxable person — it appears on all tax invoices, credit notes and FTA correspondence. The TRN is the primary key the FTA uses to track filings, payments and audit history.

How do I get a TRN in the UAE?

You apply through the FTA's EmaraTax portal at eservices.tax.gov.ae. VAT registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in any rolling 12-month window, and voluntary above AED 187,500. Corporate Tax registration is required for all UAE juridical persons regardless of income. The FTA issues the 15-digit TRN on approval — usually within 20 business days for straightforward applications. Keep the trade licence, MOA, passport copies and bank details ready before applying.

Can I verify a supplier's TRN?

Yes — and you should before claiming input VAT. The FTA's EmaraTax portal hosts a free public 'TRN Verification' lookup that confirms whether a TRN is currently active and returns the registered legal name. Verification is recommended for any new supplier, any invoice above AED 10,000, and quarterly for your full vendor list. Input VAT claimed against an invalid or suspended TRN can be disallowed at audit.

What if my TRN is not 15 digits?

Every valid UAE TRN is exactly 15 digits — no spaces, no dashes, no prefix letters. If a number on an invoice is shorter, longer, or contains characters, it is not a valid TRN. Common causes: typing error on the invoice, a placeholder used before the supplier was actually registered, or a non-UAE tax ID being passed off as a TRN. Ask the supplier for the correct 15-digit number and re-verify on EmaraTax before processing payment.

What's the difference between TRN and TIN?

TRN (Tax Registration Number) is the UAE-specific 15-digit identifier issued by the FTA for VAT and Corporate Tax. TIN (Tax Identification Number) is the generic international term used by many other jurisdictions — for example the IRS in the US or HMRC in the UK. They serve the same function (identifying a taxable person) but belong to different tax systems. In the UAE, always use 'TRN' on invoices, returns and FTA submissions.

How do I do a TRN check online?

Open the FTA EmaraTax portal at eservices.tax.gov.ae and select the public TRN Verification lookup (no login required). Enter the 15-digit TRN, complete the captcha, and the portal returns the registered legal name in English and Arabic plus the registration status (active / suspended / cancelled). Always cross-reference the returned legal name against the supplier's trade licence — typos in the TRN can return a legitimate but unrelated business.

Is TRN verification free?

Yes. TRN verification on the FTA EmaraTax portal is free for anyone — no subscription, no API key, no rate limit for manual lookups. This Velmont Crest tool is also free and runs entirely in your browser (no data leaves your device). For high-volume bulk verification across hundreds of suppliers, contact us for a managed AR/AP reconciliation workflow.

What is FTA TRN lookup?

FTA TRN lookup is the official Federal Tax Authority service that lets any UAE business or individual search whether a given 15-digit TRN is currently registered, active and assigned to a specific legal entity. The lookup is hosted at eservices.tax.gov.ae and is the only source of truth — third-party verifiers (including this tool) confirm format only. Always run the FTA lookup before claiming input VAT or processing significant supplier payments.

How do I find my TRN number?

Your TRN is printed on the VAT Registration Certificate (or Corporate Tax Registration Certificate) the FTA issues after approval. You can also find it by logging into the EmaraTax portal under your registered email — the dashboard shows your active TRN(s). For Corporate Tax, the TRN may differ from your VAT TRN if you registered separately. Both TRNs are 15-digit numbers beginning with '100'.

What does each part of the 15-digit TRN mean?

The UAE TRN uses a defined structure. Digits 1-3 are always '100' identifying the FTA registration scheme. Digits 4-11 are the taxpayer's unique serial issued in registration order. Digit 12 is a checksum used by the FTA for integrity validation. Digits 13-15 are an internal sequence identifier. The full number is what appears on tax invoices, returns, and FTA correspondence — there is no separate 'short code'.

Can a non-resident hold a UAE TRN?

Yes — non-resident businesses making taxable supplies in the UAE (typically through e-commerce, digital services, or warehouse/3PL arrangements) must register for VAT regardless of revenue threshold. The FTA issues the same 15-digit TRN to non-residents. Corporate Tax may also apply to non-residents with a permanent establishment, a UAE-sourced income, or a Nexus through digital services. Non-resident registration requires a UAE Tax Agent or local representative.
